emanuele bompan,gaspare caliri, michele restuccia) abstract "building a public: tha case of chairsharing public
service in modena" enjoy: in this paper we would like to stress the topics of applying an ethnographic approach to
the design of public services in contemporary urban spaces. existent literature (hammad 2008) approaches under a
semiotic point of view the analysis of pedestrian crossings in urban milieu. In this sense a key role is played by bruno
latour's (1999) concept of proxy which permits to recognize an active role to the subjects in the shaping of the public
spaces they're crossing. Furthermore the material semiotic approach characterizing actor-network-theory
(latour callon, 2005) extends the role played by subjects into the shaping of the public space they cross, introducing
also the topic of human/technology interaction. Relying on those bases we have developed an ethnographic
approach to urban analysis to design site-specific tools devoted to give to subjects tools for being more active in the
shaping the public (latour weibel 2005).
Thus we use a case study approach (eisenhairdt 1989) presenting chairsharing, which envisions how the
ethno-methodological analysis of Modena have let the concept of chairsharing spring and how it interact with the
biopolitics of city-governance. The case study will introduce several contextual topics: slow and sustainable
pedestrian mobility in public spaces of Italian middle cities.
Chair-sharing is a public service of movable wifi shared benches (kinds of chair-cycle) that you can rent-for-free as if it
was a normal bike-sharing. Chairsharing is a public service aimed to create a shift in mobility culture, introducing new
typologies, slower, more sustainable and socially agglutinative by means of ubiquitous computing.
As our methodology is hands-on and mixing up theoretical highlights with concrete projects, our conclusions focus on
the ability of chairsharing to fulfil our premises: light urbanism and ubiquitous computing-based devices are the proper
tools to enhance subjects’ inclusion in the construction of the public space, as well as pedestrian crossing are key
behaviours for future development of public spaces.xford University Press,Oxford

Participatory planning, participatory GIS, shared urban policies: Those words have became fundamental in the last
decade as urban politics move toward bottom- up decisional processes (Forester J., 1999; Geertman S., 2002).
However most of these processes are more related to the communicational level or often fail to take effectiveness
due to corporate real estate interest or the lack of experience in setting up participatory tables that are open to
everyone. This paper aims to propose an alternative that can parallel Participatory Planning. We call this tactic
Active Participatory Urban Design (APAD). Through which devices (conceptual and concrete) can people take direct
action on shaping the city they desire? We will show how APAD can work through the case study of the urban design
prize Modenacambiafaccia (Modena., Italy). The prize was created in 2008 to request new ideas in planning urban
areas and apply them in the Porta San Francesco and Porta Saragozza area.
Slowness is the core concept we decided to apply, derived from the new trend of slow cities and slow urbanism
( Knox P.L., 2005). Slow cities allow people to know their cities deeply and think about the use and narratives of
their space . We used light urbanism, ephemeral urbanism and new technologies (such as *r-fid, Bluetooth, GPS,
etc.), inspired by author as missing.
Our aim is to make people active players in producing public spaces configuration create narrative on specific places,
invent new uses of existing place or produce c ritics on normative urbanism.
Through cross feedback, mobile urban street furniture and active multidirectional communicational systems, people
can effectively take urbanism into their own hands.
In other words we aimed to induce s low tactical modification of the urban structure which produce facts on the
ground that can maybe influence large scale heavy planning.
We conclude that Participation is an everyday action and is an approach which could help stimulate adding new
frames of intervention and political representation.

Fama_Fame / Fame_Hunger is an In Progress Project which advances in situ by each exhibition.
The concept “to become famous” focuses the ambition of the artist to be accepted in the art system and, at the same
time, the need to survive in everyday life. It represents symbolically all relations between life, love and success,
money and the actually basic need of the human being.
The project Fama_Fame / Fame_Hunger lives on the hospitality of the local cultural and political institutions, throught
the European territory, and is attended by the residents artists and by an international network. All the artists works
without being charged and the exhibition, of corse, is for free.
Solothurn 2008: after the first step at la Fabbrica di Losone (Ticino - Switzerland) with Roberto De Luca,
Daniele Pario Perra and Giancarlo Norese coordinated by Riccardo Lisi, the second step of the exhibition is taking
place in Solothurn with 27 artists from Switzerland and abroad, and the third step will be in Rotterdam 2009 togheter
with local artists and networks as in all the edition.
The catalogue will be presented on the occasion of the Finissage.

"microsistema urbano" e il mercato del Balòn:
" I mercati stanno davanti a noi. Buona parte di quello che con buona pace degli orrori chiamiamo civiltà è nata nei
mercati. I mercati precedono le città e molto spesso le producono. Come racconta Karl Polanyi in “Traffici e mercati
negli antichi imperi”, è probabile che le lingue siano debitrici del loro sviluppo ai mercati stessi. Si racconta di mercati
della Guinea Equatoriale ( ma c’è una storia simile per l’altra Guinea, la Papua New Guinea) dove tribù diverse che
non si capiscono si incontrano e la lingua comune sono solo le merci. Questa è una verità ancora attuale. Dal
mercato di Lhassa a quello di Porta Palazzo sono le merci, gli oggetti a fare da traduzione tra soggetti che parlano
lingue diverse. Le cose diventano il linguaggio primario. Indicarle, toccarle, sta prima del dirle. Per questo i mercati
hanno una forza originaria, sono i luoghi in cui la società ricorda i propri albori e la propria dinamica vivente. In ogni
mercato si celebra il rito della strana maniera di congregarsi delle comunità. A Sarajevo e in molte città del
Mediterraneo multietnico e multireligioso i mercati erano il luogo per eccellenza dove si incontravano le differenze.
In questo senso ogni mercato è una celebrazione della tolleranza, della capacità umana, nonostante tutto, di non
farsi la guerra. Per questa funzione primitiva i mercati sono luoghi quasi sacri, che vanno rispettati, dove il diritto
viene riscritto e risarcito volta per volta. A Torino è importante a segnare una vocazione futura e presente della città
ad essere di nuovo crocevia di culture. Chi non lo capisce offende il mercato con obbrobri architettonici, come
purtroppo è avvenuto a Porta Palazzo ad opera della solita archistar nostrana.
C’è in più in questa vicenda dei mercati una chiave delle città future. Se è vero che l’urbanità è oggi in rapida
trasformazione, è proprio nel gioco della gente a comprare e vendere nei mercati che si può elaborare un nuovo
localismo che contrasti con le città tutte boutique e tutte multinazionali. I mercati di strada assicurano una funzione
primaria delle cose che le vetrine tengono a dimenticare. Nella fantasmagoria della merce che prende vita nelle
vetrine c’è uno spettacolo alla Guy Debord, il darsi dadaista delle merci al narcisismo del consumatore che vuole
identificarsi con esse. Nei banchi del mercato questo meccanismo è meno subdolo. Le cose sono le cose e stanno
tra le persone che le contrattano. Come ricorda Elias Canetti nelle sue “Voci di Marrakesh” il tirare sul prezzo, il lungo
contrattare dei bazar, il bargain , che sta in inglese per contrattare, ma anche per fare un affare è la capacità umana
di approfittare delle cose per ridefinire e confermare le relazioni. Le vetrine non fanno questo, perché con le
commesse non si contratta, esse fanno parte della vetrina, le potete guardare come se poteste comprarle.
Al mercato non ci sono commesse, ma c’è la seduzione della lingua franca che ad alta voce propone- le grida, le
abbanniate della Vucciria a Palermo come della Boqueria a Barcellona, e degli avventori che controbattono negando
alla merce l’eccellenza. Forse è al mercato che è nata l’ironia sulle cose, il compromesso che rende possibile la
